A lot of people have one, and now I have one too

Each time I would see people post about tofu presser contraptions, I would briefly think, “neato!” and promptly add it to the very bottom of my wish-list of kitchen gadgets.

Well, now I am the proud (co-)owner of a shiny new Tofu XPress! It wasn’t exactly a birthday gift. I actually got it the day before my birthday. That’s because I didn’t want kitchen stuff for my birthday. You can’t give somebody a gift that says I want you to cook more tofu, although I guess that really isn’t so bad after all, is it? Yes, it’s true, thankfully Alex loves tofu, and so this is for both of us. Aww.

But I can’t figure out how he discovered the existence of this thing. He just tells me that you can find anything on the internet. So, 1. Who told? 2. Kitchen stuff as gifts: pro or con?

I normally buy Trader Joe’s extra-firm organic tofu, and it’s already really firm, but a good bit of water was pressed out immediately. I was curious to see my own before and after photos, and I know these are all over the web as blogger after blogger hops on the bandwagon. Yes, this is easier than what I normally do, and there were no crashes in the kitchen when the canned tomatoes atop the cast iron skillet fell from their unsteady perch.

I can’t say that my life has changed, but I’ll see what happens as I use it more. One thing that was nice is that the tofu crumbled less around the edges and sliced more easily—perfect for oven-roasting in barbecue sauce.

  2. Hmm, well I'm definitely not going to scoff at kitchen tools as gifts - in fact, I embrace them - but I can't say that the Xpress was really on my list. I've heard life-changing raves about it though.

  3. Call me crazy, but I rarely ever press my tofu (because I'm lazy). I've been seeing the Tofu Xpress everywhere online lately, which makes me want to try it. Maybe I can just rent one from someone.

By the way, Happy Belated birthday!

  4. I love kitchen gifts but I am not like most people. I don't have one of these either. Can't wait to hear more about it as you use it more.

I hope you are enjoying birthday week, or month. If we have to have them (birthdays) I say stretch them out. ;-)

Ummmm, I guess I'm crazy, because I like getting kitchen stuff for my b-day. :o) That's all I wanted last year, and it will probably be the same way this year.
Too funny about your crashes when pressing tofu...that's what happens with me every time I press tofu....lol

  6. That sounds like a fun kitchen addition. I don't mind kitchen gifts, but I have a small kitchen, so storage is an issue. That BBQ tofu looks yummy!

  8. I'm stickin' with the canned tomatoes falling off the cast iron skillet. You'd be surprised how well the Sony Walkman can drown out the sounds of crashing in the kitchen.

  11. Well, happy birthday! I am all for kitchen gadgets as presents. I got loaf pans for Christmas and donut pans for my b-day. If it's what you love to do, why not get it as a gift?

  12. I say "pro"! But I'm kind of boring with kids, so what do I know? I really just like gifts that are a surprise, something that I really wanted and that I didn't know someone had made a mental note of - or just knew I would like it. I would definitely like one of these. And I know there are many women who are jealous that your husband loves tofu.
