Too often travel, instead of broadening the mind, merely lengthens the conversation.*

This has not been the greatest food week for me. Instead, I’ve been trying to eat everything perishable from my fridge, which still doesn’t look too terribly empty,

Tossing anything I have left into a pot and calling it soup,

Don’t try this at home, kids: sweet potatoes, carrots, lima beans, onion, garlic, pinto beans, broth, and coconut milk. We’re eating it. Sweet Alex tells me he likes it.

Gathering packable snacks, choosing books, and syncing my iPod,

It’s almost travel time! What is it with cats and suitcases?

What are your best travel tips? If they include not announcing your imminent departure on your blog, oh well: I thought about it and decided I don’t have anything you want. If you drop by, please play with the kitties. They get lonely. But beware the wrath of Twinkie Weener.

  1. Haha! I have a picture of my black cat in almost the SAME POSE! Adorable! And my cats also cannot stay out of an open suitcase. If its packed and zipped shut, they all wanna lay on it instead...as if to say, "Please take me with you even though I hate car rides and will make your drive hell with my incessant whining from the cat carrier."

Anyway, have fun wherever you're going! You make me wish I had a Kindle.

  2. Cute kitty pics...my kitties love to crawl into any box or other largish container too.

Travel time sounds exciting. Home for the holidays? Or is it an exotic yuletide vacation somewhere?

  3. Ha ha! I know what you mean about announcing travel plans, but then I think that all of us food bloggers are just much too obsessed with food to take time out and break in to others' homes. That's probably for the hardware bloggers or something like that. :-)

  4. Is there any Tomato Soup left? I could see breaking in for a hot bowl of homemade soup. Maybe help myself to some of that local PFHROzen ice cream for dessert...

  6. Alex is too sweet! i remember a super rushed potato soup i made once - in my neglectful and hurried state i let the onions brown toooo much and once blended the soup tasted waaaay to oniony and gross. dan was much more kinda about that soup than i was. i believe i spit mine out and he simply said, "it's pretty good, i'm gonna get some saltines to crumble in it." so nice of him. i hope you're going somewhere super fun - and i am sure you are! as far as traveling tips, i don't have any good ones (except bring a reusable container for your water to refill throughout your trip. i travel with my klean kanteen and it saves me from dehydration and getting fussy every time.) simply because i get too anxious when i travel and don't go outside of my little bubble too often. kitties and suitcases are like pb&j. love it!

  7. If your kitties are missing by the time you return, well... you know where to find them!

(Kidding, of course. The only "cat-napping" that I do is sleep related! Sorry, bad joke - but I just couldn't resist!)

Props to Alex for liking that soup :) My bf does the same thing, regardless of how icky my sometimes-crazy recipes turn out to be! Boys can be kinda adorable that way...

    Have a great trip.

  8. Twinkie Weener!? You need to explain this one. My cat likes to sit in the middle of my clothes when I am preparing for a trip. I think she's trying to prevent me from leaving when she does that. One of the hardest parts about going on a trip is emptying the fridge before we leave! We always have either too much stuff left or not enough food to eat during the week. Enjoy your trip!

  9. What is it with cats and suitcases? Ours do the exact same thing.

Your frig was so neat and empty. I would love to see mine look like that just once. LOL

I can't wait to see your pics when you get back. Enjoy yourself but I know you will. ;-)

    ciao,
    Ali

  11. Haha, my cats love suitcases so much! Glad to know it's not just mine :) They also start freaking out when I pull the suitcase out since they don't want me to leave. I feel your pain with the soup, but it looks pretty good to me! :) Safe travels!!!

  12. hey, that soup looks good! I love the kitty pics! My cats always get into my suitcases (and occasionally pee in them) when I am getting ready for a trip. Naughty naughty. I love the last picture you got of your kitty! Awesome!

  13. Your soup of leftover is cute. All good ingreidents but it sounds to me like they didn't work together. Oh well! At least your tried, right ;) Looks like you're all packed and ready to good with those gadgets and snacks you should be all set. Have a great trip!

  14. I had some really strange wraps before we went on our vacation, just throwing in whatever was left in the fridge. And that's funny - I always fret about whether to announce I'm on vaction, too.
